Methods of Non-a-Amino Acid Synthesis (Paperback, 2nd edition): Michael Bryant Smith Methods of Non-a-Amino Acid Synthesis (Paperback, 2nd edition)
Michael Bryant Smith
R1,951 Discovery Miles 19 510 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Although less common than -amino acids, non- -amino acids-where the amino group is not on the carbon immediately adjacent to the carboxyl group but is attached to another carbon in the chain (for example, the , , carbon)-are components of biologically important molecules, are significant in the pharmaceutical industry, and are useful starting materials for many areas of organic chemistry. Since the publication of the first edition of this book nearly 20 years ago, synthetic work devoted to the preparation of non- -amino acids has expanded greatly. Methods of Non- -Amino Acid Synthesis, Second Edition has been extensively rewritten and reorganized, providing an up-to-date review of strategies and methods for non- -amino acid synthesis, particularly those amino acids that are key synthetic intermediates or important compounds in their own right. It focuses on acyclic amino acids of C3-C10, but also aminoalkanoic carboxylic acids, aminoalkenoic acids, and aminoalkynoic acids. The new edition contains many updated references and has a greater emphasis on the biological importance of non- -amino acids. In addition to an array of synthetic methods, the book offers discussions on why non- -amino acids are important. The book covers synthetic methods that rely on substituent refunctionalization, the conversion of cyclic precursors to acyclic amino acids, conjugate addition reactions, and enolate anion reactions and condensation reactions that lead to non- -amino acids. It also examines reactions and strategies that lead to good diastereoselectivity and enantioselectivity during synthesis. A chapter devoted to biologically important amino acids includes separate sections on GABA, GABOB, carnitine, DAVA, statine, and other significant amino acids as well as a new section on peptides and proteins that contain non- -amino acids. The final chapter addresses aminocyclic and heterocyclic amino acids.

R1,649 Discovery Miles 16 490 Ships in 12 - 17 working days

Over the last two decades, the study of languages and writing systems and their relationship to literacy acquisition has begun to spread beyond studies based mostly on English language learners. As the worldwide demand for literacy continues to grow, researchers from different countries with different language backgrounds have begun examining the connection between their language and writing system and literacy acquisition. This volume is part of this new, emerging field of research. In addition to reviewing psychological research on reading (the author's specialty), the reader is introduced to the Hebrew language: its structure, its history, its writing system, and the issues involved in being fluently literate in Hebrew. Chapters 1-4 introduce the reader to the Hebrew language and word structure and focuses on aspects of Hebrew that have been specifically researched by experimental cognitive psychologists. The reader whose only interest is in the psychological mechanisms of reading Hebrew may be satisfied with these chapters. Chapters 5-8 briefly surveys the history of the Hebrew language and its writing system, the origin of literacy in Hebrew as one of the first alphabetic systems, and then raises questions about the viability (or possibility) of having full-scale literacy in Hebrew. Together, the two sets of chapters present the necessary background for studying the psychology of reading Hebrew and literacy in Hebrew. This volume is appropriate for anyone interested in comparative reading and writing systems or in the Hebrew language in particular. This includes linguists, researchers, and graduate students in such diverse fields as cognitive psychology, psycholinguistics, literacy education, English as a second language, and communication disorders.

Not Like Me - A Field Guide for Influencing a Diverse World (Paperback): Eric Michael Bryant Not Like Me - A Field Guide for Influencing a Diverse World (Paperback)

We live in a diverse world filled with unprecedented opportunity. According to author Eric Michael Bryant in Not Like Me, formerly titled Peppermint-Filled Pinatas, we can become agents of change creating genuine unity among people from a variety of backgrounds and belief systems through our relationships. Through humorous stories and pointed insights gleaned from Eric's own personal experiences and failures, the experiences of others, and the life and teachings of Jesus, you will discover how to move beyond ethnic, racial, cultural, or ideological barriers towards genuine friendship with others. In our nation, an "uncivil war" is raging. Liberals call for racial reconciliation and tolerance while conservatives tend to hide from our pluralistic world or fight against it. None of these approaches will last. We need to create a new future that connects to God's heart. We can remove the religious baggage of Christianity to discover the world Jesus intended. Followers of Christ will be inspired to actively engage the world in order to overcome stereotypes placed upon us and influence those who have not been interested in Jesus because of these stereotypes. In addition, spiritual seekers will find that when stripped away from the religion created around him, Jesus' dream for our world is remarkable and refreshing. In this new world, we can discover how to resolve conflict, overcome bitterness, create a better future, develop diverse communities, and enjoy our diverse world. Not Like Me also includes a brief article after each chapter with practical ways to apply the principles presented in that chapter. The contributors include: Ed Stetzer, Amena Brown, Margaret Feinberg, Kevin Harney, Dr. Gerardo Marti, Kim Martinez, Lon Wong, Mark DeYmaz, Princess Zulu, Dan Kimball, and Erwin McManus (Foreword).

His steadfast beliefs falter, however, when his and Lord Peter Dattering (Paul Lavers)'s search for the treasure of alchemist Abbot Thomas (John Herrington) unleashes a terrifying spectre.

Michael Bryant
R432 Discovery Miles 4 320 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

Kedesh City of Refuge is an allegorical account of a Christian life written while I was in Bible College. It is a book that is founded upon Kingdom and our King, Jesus and it recounts many of the decisions a young Christian must make when choosing to serve the King of kings and the Lord of lords. The action packed storyline follows the main Character Adam as he flees from the Avenger of Blood, across the wilderness of sin trying to reach Kedesh, a city of refuge where he will be safe. During his adventures Adam meets many memorable characters such as Discipler, Trueheart and Faith. He avoids the truants at the gate and travels to the arena of struggle and conflict in order to learn how to serve the Lord of Kedesh and how to fight the battles that would inevitably come in his life.

Kingdom (Paperback): Mr. Michael Bryant Kingdom (Paperback)
Mr. Michael Bryant
R296 Discovery Miles 2 960 Ships in 10 - 15 working days

"Kingdom" provides a provocative new way to see the Church as taught by Jesus Christ. "Kingdom" was written to show the difference between the 'religion' of Christianity and the 'Kingdom' of Christianity. "Kingdom" is a catalyst to provoke the body of Christ to reexamine how we see the Church. Christianity, as taught by Jesus was never intended to be a religion, but it was intended to be a Kingdom. "Kingdom" breaks the Church down to its most basic components. There are only two Kingdoms ruling two dominions; one of light and the other of darkness. There are only two covenants; the old covenant under the law sealed with the blood of sheep and goats and the new covenant sealed with the blood of Jesus Christ. There are only two masters; the Prince of Peace or the prince of darkness.
